Top Ten Tuesdays: The 10 Best Podcasts

Well I’ve been a little slack with updating the blog recently, but Top Ten Tuesdays is officially BACK! Here’s this week’s Top Ten (in no particular order):

Sawbones Unknown

‘A marital tour through medical history’ – hosted by comedian Justin McElroy and his wife Dr. Sydnee McElroy, Sawbones is one of my absolute favourites. It’s full of fascinating medical history facts and handled in a light-hearted manner, making it a really enjoyable listen.

Small Town MurdersUnknown-1

Who would have thought gruesome true crime stories from small town America could be so hilarious? James Pietragello and Jimmie Whisman make up the True Crime Comedy team, taking random crime stories—in this case from tiny towns in the U.S.—and taking the absolute piss out of both the perpetrator and the town itself. If you’re easily offended or don’t like explicit language this might not be the podcast for you.

Crime in SportsUnknown-2

Another one from the Truce Crime Comedy boys, this one goes into some of the ridiculous crimes perpetrated by athletes—assault, murder, smuggling, arson…—all dealt with in the same hilarious manner as Small Town Murder. You don’t need to follow sports to enjoy this one, but the same content warning applies as above.

Stuff You Missed in History ClassUnknown-3

It’s no secret I’m a massive history geek, so this is a no-brainer for me. Holly Fry and Tracy B. Wilson put out two podcasts each week, delving into the lesser-known areas of history. Incredibly interesting and informative with hosts that work well together and keep the listener entertained. It’s been running for almost ten years now so there is no shortage of episodes to choose from.

Stuff You Should KnowUnknown-4

Hosted by Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark, this podcast covers pretty much everything from how earthquakes happen to how beer is made to scuba diving cats and Jack the Ripper. It’s also been running for almost a decade and has recently been picked up for a TV series.

Stuff to Blow Your MindUnknown-5

Yet another one from the ‘How Stuff Woks’ network, Stuff to Blow Your Mind is all about science and the incredible possibilities that exist in our universe. Hosted by Robert Lamb and Christian Sager.

PresidentialUnknown-6

This one was set up by Washington Post correspondent Lillian Cunningham in January last year, counting down each past president in the 43 weeks leading up to the November election. Even though it’s now finished it’s definitely worth a listen if you’re interested in U.S. history.

Geek History Lessonimages

This ultimate geek-out—a weird and wonderful place where nerds can be nerds and learn all about the history of their favourite characters and stories. The series focuses mainly on individual characters, with the subject of each episode being pulled from across the vast sphere of geekdom. There are Marvel and DC comic book characters, as well as Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Star Wars (just to name a few). Hosted by Jason Inman and Ashley Victoria Robinson.

SpyCastUnknown-7

This is the official podcast of the International Spy Museum. And needless to say, it’s pretty awesome. Originally hosted by the museum’s executive director, Peter Earnest, it’s now been taken over by spy historian Vince Houghton. Guests include former CIA and FBI agents, naval investigators, army intelligence officers, members of the armed forces, authors, journalists and more.

Unknown

Serial

Another true crime podcast—this one is much different to the ones by True Crime Comedy. Hosted by Sarah Koenig, Serial dedicates an entire season (twelve episodes) to each case, dissecting every piece of evidence to determine whether or not a wrongful conviction may have transpired. It is currently in its second season.
